POOL LEAK DETECTION: BUCKET TEST

This is a two phase test- once with the pump on the entire time, once with the pump off.

THESE RESULTS WILL SAVE TIME DURING THE LEAK DETECTION, THUS SAVING YOU MONEY

You will need:

  • 5 gallon bucket.
  • Permanent marker or bright colored tape.
  • Heavy object that can get wet (ex: large rock or brick).

Before beginning the test, make sure the pool is filled to normal operating levels. Turn off all pump(s) and autofill. Do not backwash or splash water out of the pool during the test. After everything is turned off, wait for your water to calm and become still.

  • Set your bucket on the first or second step. Add weight if needed to keep the bucket submerged.
  • Fill the bucket about two-thirds full.
  • Using tape or a permanent marker, mark the top edges of the water on the outside of the bucket & the inside of the bucket.
  • Wait 24 hours then check the levels.
  • Write down the duration of the time you tested, how much the inside level dropped & how much the outside level dropped.
  • Refill the bucket and/or pool to the marks on the bucket.
  • Rerun the test for the same duration you did the first phase, but this time, the pump is on. Write down the results.
