Many environmental factors are also responsible for the water in your pool seeming less. Wind, sun, and humidity can all determine water levels in your pool. So knowing whether there is an actual leak in your pool can be tough.
Knowing whether your pool is leaking more water when the pump is on, when the pump is off or if it loses the same with the pump on and off is crucial info to tell us when you are scheduling. Run this simple test ahead of time and give us the results.
You first need to do some preparations to get accurate leak tests on your pool. Clean and vacuum your pool thoroughly. There should be no dirt or debris left in the pool to help detection become easier.
THE PUMP (OR BUCKET) TEST
This test is simple, yet critical. It will save us time and you money.
This test will verify if a pipe or the structure is leaking.
You will perform this test twice.
First you will test with the pump ON for 24 hours. Second you will test with the pump OFF for the same 24 hours.
The pool must be filled to the normal operating level for each phase of the test, plus, the time tested must be the same. Mark the water level on the tile or pool wall with tape or a marker, noting the time and date. Fill a 2-cup measuring cup with one cup of water and put out near the pool. Note or mark the
inside level of the cup. The cup will fill with water if it rains and evaporates the same as the pool.
WHAT THE RESULTS MEAN: If the pool or spa loses water during the pump on phase, it means the returns or pressure side of the system is leaking = returns/pool cleaner / waterfalls-features and or backwash line.
If the pool or spa loses water during the pump off phase, the suction side of the system is leaking, the main drain or
skimmer lines are leaking.
If the pool or spa loses water regardless if the pump is on or off, it means the structure is leaking IE; light, crack, vinyl liner, skimmer throat at the tile to plastic joint, skimmer basket
crack, hydrostatic valves in the main drain drain body.
